Logo Design–Princeton University Department of Sociology
The Department of Sociology at Princeton University proudly maintains the title of one of the best sociology departments in the United States. The department felt it was in need of a new identity that accurately reflected their position as #1 in U.S. News’ Best Sociology Departments poll.
When we began the task of creating the department’s new logo, we were faced with the challenge of creating artwork that accurately reflected their culture without sacrificing readability. We also wanted to incorporate an icon in the logo that reflected upon the work sociologists perform while being immediately recognizable. That marriage produced an icon with an “S” built out of two stacked books. While the “S” acts as an indicator for the department, the books represent something most sociologists spend their careers working on – when they’re not in class teaching of course.
